The neutral zone is the area between the two teams at the line of scrimmage. The center is the only one allowed in the neutral zone before the ball is snapped. Just as in countless Star Trek episodes, violations of the neutral zone come with consequences, namely a 5 yard false start or encroachment penalty. As I mentioned in a previous post,  this is the one minor penalty that drives me crazy because it’s caused by a lack of focus.
