When I first heard this term, I assumed it was a reference to color, but it is actually the range between the darkest and lightest parts of a photograph. If you remember my post about histograms, you’ll recognize that the tonal range helps you determine whether or not a photo is properly exposed; a photograph with a lot of dark and light areas is said to have a “wide” tonal range, and if you shoot black and white photos, the term refers to the range between the solid black and absolute white of your image.
