52 Weeks of Gratitude — Something You Take For Granted

I think the one thing I take for granted is the freedom I have as an American woman. We’re constantly bombarded with how horrible men are and it’s easy to fall into lockstep with that mindset, but I refuse to do so. When I think of the abuse women take in other parts of the world, whether it be economic, physical or religious/societal oppression, I realize just how fortunate I am to have what I do. I don’t need my husband’s permission to do anything (though out of courtesy, I do consult with him on certain things, but that isn’t the same as asking permission). I can drive by myself, wear what I want to, work outside the home and not fear that my father will kill me if I dishonor him. I can be who and what I want to be, and I try never to take my freedom for granted, as there are women the world over who would be willing to die for what I have without having to work for it.
