An audible is when the quarterback changes the play call at the line of scrimmage if he sees something on defense that he thinks will hinder the play that was called in the huddle.
Have you ever wondered exactly what a quarterback is saying to the rest of the offense? Let’s face it something like:
423 Nascar Cowboy on 2
can sound pretty ridiculous but it’s actually a very specific set of instructions to the rest of the team. The numbers tell the receivers what route to run – each player is assigned a number in a specific play. Bill said this sounds like a spread offense formation (more on that later) so it would be telling the running backs and the offensive line what to do as well. “On 2 means the ball will be snapped on count two. That is important because if an offensive player jumps over the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped, it’s a five yard false start penalty.
So the next time you think quarterbacks are wierdos who speak in tongues, you’ll know better:)
