Author’s Note: This is another scrap from my 2016 Hobonichi experiment. It’s based on this prompt from The 3 A.M. Ephiphany by Brian Kitely – write a story about a ghost who is bored with the immensities of time and timelessness. Originally written 1/27/16.
Hello! Hello?!?! Are you even listening to me?? Seriously? You’re glued to your smartphone aren’t you? *sigh* You wouldn’t be scared of me if I materialized and smacked you in the head right now, would you? I’ve been a ghost for the past 462 years and I swear I haven’t been able to give a good scare for the last 30 years. Used to be, a person only lived 35 to 40 years at the most and death was a big scary thing that could come in a lot of gruesome and nightmarish ways, but now? Science has extended life far beyond anyone’s wildest dreams, wars are fought by remote drone proxy and there’s nothing left for us non-corporal lifeforms to do that’s fun anymore. Anyone want to help me start a plague?
